Boston Whaler 280 Vantage Guide: A Premium Dual Console for Coastal Day Boating

I talk about this boat in a previous article where I compare it to the Pursuit D266 and S268. The Boston Whaler 280 Vantage is a premium dual console for buyers who want a large family-friendly coastal boat with strong brand recognition. It is a natural step up from smaller Vantage models and from 22- to 24-foot family boats that start to feel crowded in chop or with a larger crew.  The 280 Vantage was first introduced in 2020.  Be sure to check out the reviews I have posted below from a couple different sites.

Key Specs to Know

Boston Whaler describes the 280 Vantage as a 28-foot dual console combining offshore capability with bowrider comfort. Current model information lists a 27’9″ centerline length, 12-person capacity, 180-gallon fuel capacity, and dual console features aimed at day cruising, watersports, fishing, and family comfort.

What This Boat Does Well

The 280 Vantage is a strong family platform. It gives passengers more wind protection and comfort than a center console, while still offering fishing and watersports capability. The brand recognition also helps in the used market because many buyers actively search for Whalers.

What to Watch For Used

The risk is paying too much for the name. Inspect upholstery, gelcoat, batteries, electronics, head system, hardtop/canvas, pumps, and the outboards. Compare the price to newer and older Vantage models so you are not paying a current-model premium for a boat with old electronics or tired soft goods.

Model Years to Look For or Be Cautious With

I would look for the cleanest late-model example you can afford, especially one with modern four-stroke power, complete service records, updated electronics, and quality storage history. I would be cautious with any older 280 Vantage that has worn upholstery, dated electronics, corrosion, or limited maintenance documentation. No single model year should be rejected without inspection, but condition and engine history matter a lot.

Best Use Case

Best for families who want a premium dual console for Intracoastal cruising, restaurants, sandbars, watersports, and occasional fishing. Just prepare to pay a premium price for it.

Bottom Line

The 280 Vantage is a very desirable boat if your priority is premium family comfort and resale strength. It is not the cheapest way into a 28-foot dual console, but a clean used example can be a strong long-term ownership choice.
